Get inspired and view project ideas for mosaicsMosaics

First let’s start out by describing exactly what a mosaic is. A mosaic is a piece of decorative art made from assembling small pieces of stone, seashells, glass or other material in different colors. The most popular mosaic method uses glass squares called tessera.

Mosaics have been used to decorate houses, buildings, gardens and handicrafts since ancient times. Their distinct look, made with colored glass tiles, can be seen all over Europe and the Middle East, because unlike paintings or murals, they don’t fade in color over time and they rarely decompose. It’s a timeless art that is eye catching and unique, and the earliest known mosaics were found in a Mesopotamian temple dating back to the 3rd millennium BC!

Mosaics can be decorative and abstract, or be used to create scenes of life. They were used in temples and churches and were a celebrated staple of architecture throughout Islamic, Roman, Greek culture and most of the ancient civilizations, the Middle Ages, and even the Renaissance age and the modern age. In fact, one of the most famous Spanish artists, Gaudi, brought the world’s attention back to mosaics when he incorporated mosaic installations, covering entire buildings from floor to ceiling with mosaic artwork in the new Modernist style in Barcelona.

Mosaics are a great way to add color to your garden, an exterior wall, a backsplash in your kitchen or even just as a stand-alone tile to hang on the wall. Your design can be a simple geometric pattern or a detailed “painting” of plants, flowers, birds, animals or buildings. Wondering what you would make using mosaics, here’s some ideas you can use your artwork for at home using the mosaic tiles you make at The Bent Brush.

  • Create stepping stones for your garden path.
  • Create a wall mural using several different tiles to make one scene.
  • Create a series of tiles to use on a garden bench.
  • Create a gift items such as a mosaic picture frame or the top of a jewelry box
  • Create a series of tiles to be mounted as a backsplash in your kitchen.
  • Create some individual tiles to install as part of the tiles in your shower stall.

We look forward to having you come in to create mosaics with us. We will show you how it works on a walk in basis. An in-progress fee will apply to a return visit.

Mosaic Art: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mosaic process like at The Bent Brush?

Creating a mosaic is like a creative puzzle! 🧩 You’ll choose a base, select from our variety of glass tiles and pebbles, and glue your design. Because mosaics don't require kiln firing, you take your project home the same day along with a grout kit and instructions to finish it 24 hours later.

How much does it cost to make a mosaic, and are there studio fees?

Our mosaic pricing is all-inclusive for your first visit! 🏷️ The price covers the base, glass tiles, adhesive, and your take-home grout kit. Following our studio policy, there are no hourly studio fees for your initial session; a fee only applies if you return for a second session to finish the same project.

Do I need a reservation to create a mosaic in Cape Coral?

No reservations are required! 🚫📅 We welcome walk-ins at our South Cape Coral studio on a first-come, first-served basis. Mosaics are a popular choice for spontaneous creative outings since you can complete the assembly in one visit and take it home immediately.

Is mosaic making safe for children?

Mosaics are best for children ages 8 and up. 🧒 Since the process involves glass tiles and nipping tools, we require adult supervision. For younger artists, we often recommend pottery painting as a safer, more accessible alternative for small hands.

How long does it take to complete a mosaic project?

Most guests spend between 1.5 to 3 hours designing and gluing their mosaic. ⏳ The time varies based on the size of the base you choose and the complexity of your design. If you don't finish in one go, you can always come back for a second session.

Can I take my mosaic home the same day?

Yes! Mosaics are a "dry" craft, meaning they don't go in the kiln. 🏠 Once your pieces are glued, you take the project home. We provide a grout kit for you to apply the finishing touches at home after the glue has dried for 24 hours.

Do I need to be artistic to make a mosaic?

Not at all! 🎨 Mosaics are very beginner-friendly. We have samples for inspiration and our staff will show you how to use glass nippers to shape your tiles. It’s a meditative, tactile process that anyone can enjoy regardless of their art background.

Can I host a mosaic-themed party at your studio?

Absolutely! 🥳 Mosaics are perfect for bridal showers, "girls' night out," or team-building. Our studio on SE 47th Terrace offers a great atmosphere for groups. Contact us to book our private party room for your next mosaic-making celebration.
